5 Questions for Dick Vitale

by Andrew Marchand, NY Post

With college hoops underway, the Post's Andrew Marchand caught up with ESPN's Dick Vitale. The 63-year-old Vitale, who is an ASA Advisory Board member, grew up in Elmwood Park, NJ and enters his 24th season with ESPN.

Q: How do you feel when this time of year comes around?

A: It is a feeling of joy and jubilation. I really get so excited to see the "Diaper Dandys." It is seeing all the up and coming players that really gets me excited.

Q: Who do you like to win it all?

A: I love Arizona. They are the deepest team in America. I believe their second five could be Top 25 in the nation.

Q: You have been a Devil Ray season-ticket holder since their inception. What do you think about Lou Piniella?

A: Before the Devil Rays signed Piniella, I called the owner, Vince Naimoli, and left a message. I said, 'Vince, please convey to Lou what a challenge it would be - how he would be at home and how we can't afford to lose him.'

Q: Where is the line between calling a "regular" game and calling a "big" game in terms of your broadcasting excitement, because that is where some of the criticism against you comes from?

A: I certainly violate every rule in television probably, but I always try to be myself. Anyone who knows me, if I'm on the television tube or off, knows I have always had a passion and love for what I'm doing. I just feel the moment. I just get excited with the moment. I'm not going to apologize about that to anybody. If they want to criticize me, then so be it. I have taken the hits over the years, and all I know is this is my 24th year now. I must be doing something right because the fans have reacted in a positive way.

Q: In kindergarten, you lost your vision in your left eye. Is that very difficult for you to deal with?

A: I don't think so, because I don't know what it is really like to have 20/20 vision. I never had that my whole life. I do everything everybody else does.
