Dan Quayle, former Vice President of the United
States, was honored Wednesday, Sept. 10, at a ceremony attended
by over 800 people including ASA President Lou Schwartz. A bust
of Vice President Quayle was unveiled and it will stand alongside
other Vice Presidents in the Capitol Rotunda, in Washington, DC.
Quayle was a guest at the 6th annual ASA Hall of Fame Dinner
in November of 1990 where he presented the ASA “Hero of
the Year” award to David Opont, a young man who was almost
burned to death because he wouldn’t take drugs. He has been
a supporter of the ASA ever since.
Also attending the ceremony was former President George Bush,
Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell, Senate
Majority Leader Bill Frist, Democratic Minority Leader Tom Daschle,
Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut and former Senator Trent Lott
of Mississippi, among others.
